In a viral video circulating on social media, Garzeawu, a veteran sports journalist and BBC correspondent in Liberia, is seen being physically assaulted by police officers on Saturday, January 25, 2025, before the quarter-final matches of the National County Sports Meet at the Samuel K. Doe (SKD) Sports Complex.
SWAL expressed concern over the ongoing attacks on sports journalists who, despite limited resources, dedicate their time and efforts to cover the County Meet.
The association strongly condemns the violence and calls for a thorough and immediate investigation into the assault on Garzeawu, who is a former vice president of SWAL.
In a statement, the Liberia National Police (LNP), signed by spokesperson Cecelia Clarke, acknowledged the incident and assured that a full investigation is underway.
Additionally, SWAL leadership has expressed frustration over the challenges faced by its members, particularly with accessing the stadium during events.
The association is urging the Ministry of Youth and Sports to allow accredited sports journalists to use their ID cards for entry to County Meet games moving forward.
SWAL also emphasized that the new identification cards, which feature advanced security features such as unique QR codes and specific ID numbers, are among the best in Liberia and should be recognized for their effectiveness.
